TRESTLEBOARD

December 2001

News From the East

As you are reading this newsletter, Thanksgiving will be a memory and Christmas will be around the corner.  I hope everyone had plenty of turkey and will have a most Joyous of Holiday seasons.  As a reminder, the children’s Christmas party is on December 16th, see the Calendar of Events for more details.

On November 17, 2001, our day started out rather foggy.  RWB Robert S. Odon, WB Kenneth Crouse, WB Edgar L. Harris and myself set off for the Past Masters' Convocation in Mansfield.  The drive down was difficult due to the heavy fog and we needed to be there by 7:30 a.m.  After coffee and donuts, we had the 20th District meeting followed by the Past Master’s Convocation and then the Officers’ School of Instruction.

As you know, November 17, 2001, was also the date for Installation of Officers for the 183rd year of Medina Lodge.  I would like to thank everyone who participated in making that day a memory that I will always treasure.  It was very heart warming to see the sidelines so full.  I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your participation.  Brethren, it is all of YOU that make Medina Lodge what it is.  For those of you who couldn’t make it, we also celebrated my (39th and holding) birthday.  Thank you very much for the birthday wish and cake.

We presented Brother Larry Donovan, P.M., with a Past Master’s watch as a remembrance of his year in the East.  Brother Larry asked if this was to help him get to Lodge on time.

This year will be full of fun and hard work. Our Inspection, which will be here before you know it, will be in the Entered Apprentice Degree.

Keep your eyes on the Trestleboard for further updates.

See you in Lodge,

Lloyd

ONE VERSION OF FREEMASONRY

After the Norman conquest, England was invaded by a perfect army of ecclesiastics; and churches, monasteries, cathedrals and abbeys were commenced in every part of the country. Where these buildings were being erected in towns the work could be undertaken by the local guild, but when they were far from the populous places a difficulty was experienced in procuring sufficient skilled labor. To meet this, it is supposed that many experienced members of the guilds were induced to sever their connection with the local body and accept service under the new ecclesiastical authority, thus becoming free from the restrictions and limitations to which they had previously been subject, and henceforth being designated Freemasons.

The church building Freemasons, being a national organization whose members traveled throughout the length and breadth of the land, wherever employment was obtainable, ofttimes found it impracticable to refer to their late employers for their character and qualifications. Hence arose the necessity for sign, token and word, with which our ancient brethren went to and fro. Whence came this sign, token and word? We do not know. We read of an assembly at York, 926 A.D., of which, however, no record remains. But there must have been a meeting held somewhere, at which regulations were adopted, which served to bind the brotherhood together for many generations (John A. Thorp, P.A. Gr. D.E., England).

Freemasonry's Mission Statement

Freemasonry provides opportunities for sincere, honest, forthright men who want to contribute to the improvement of themselves and of their communities. Through our Masonic fraternalism, we reaffirm our dedication and unity to become involved citizens who have a strong desire to preserve the values that have continued, and will continue, to make America great.
