News From the East

My Brethren:

On my first meeting I was honored to assist Right Worshipful Brother Dennis Lawson in presenting a 50 Year pin to Brother Homer Hosey, and 25 Year pins to Brother David Hanshue and Brother Daniel Hanshue.

Although year 2002 is about to end, it seems like we turn around and Spring is coming and long Summer runs by, Fall's beauty is gone, Winter sets in with its cold and snow but with Winter comes the holidays Thanksgiving and Christmas. So as Christmas approaches remember, my Brethren, it is Christ's birthday and in joy we are celebrating with family and dear friends. As January 1st approaches and we celebrate the beginning of a new year, drive safely. Be safe during the holidays so you can spend many more years with your loved ones and friends.

Respectfully,

William Carl Thompson

In Remembrance of Brother Rudyard Kipling

Born Joseph Rudyard Kipling, December 30, 1865, Bombay, India. Initiated Monday, April 5, 1886 at a Regular Meeting of the Lodge of Hope and Perseverance, No.782, English Constitution, held at the Masonic Hall, Anarkali, Lahore, India. Passed at a Regular Meeting of the Lodge on Monday, May 3, 1886. Raised at a Regular Meeting of the Lodge on Monday, December 6, 1886. Died January 18, 1936, London, England.

There are many great poems, which have been acknowledged for their beauty and for the lessons which they teach. Undoubtedly the finest of these is "IF" written by Brother Kipling. It was not written as a Masonic Poem, but it has been quoted in the past in many Lodges and will no doubt continue to be recited in the future among men who prize honor and virtue above the external advantages of rank and fortune.

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build `em up with worn-out tools

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: `Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!
