TRESTLEBOARD September 2006
From the EastDear Brethren, Again there are designs upon the Trestleboard! I hope the summer season was a relaxing and refreshing one for you and your family. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who helped with the Donut Hut and especially to our Jr. Deacon Bro. Dick Metzler for running it for us year. As we return to lodge from summer break we will anticipate a busy fall with lots of degree work. We have several investigating committees that will be returning reports and our website continues to bring inquiries from men who are interested in becoming Masons. Finally, a note of congratulations to our DeMolay Chapter. Sean Shuler and Alex Marshall were chosen as state officers, our Senior Deacon Bro. Doug Shuler has been selected as Chapter Advisor of the year for the State of Ohio, and the chapter received the Membership Award and Chapter of the Year Award for the State of Ohio. The banner they received is in the DeMolay room. Fraternally, Jim Gilbert, WM

Complete Idiots Guide to Freemasonry This is a handbook for Freemasons. Well organized with two Tables of Contents (one is an overview and one is comprehensive), and an Appendix. The Appendix includes a Glossary, a Reading List, Ritual and an Index. This is the structure of the book. The substance can be defined as a thorough explanation of Freemasonry in layman's terms. It is an easy read, and the information is well researched. I found information about Masonry that I had not seen in other publications. To the reader, it is not a re-hash of another writer's thoughts. There are several reasons for liking this work. - it promotes Masonry without being a sales pitch; it stresses the ethics of the fraternity and its relationship to the moral improvement of the individual member; is very readable and understandable. Dr. Morris spends considerable time handling the historical aspects of the craft, and in doing so explodes some of the popular myths that have led to general misunderstandings about Masonry. The Morgan incident is a good example. Often our detractors attempt to use Captain Morgan as an example of the barbarity of our penalties. The book points out that the evidence against Masonry is pure supposition, and that no one has demonstrated one fact to support a fraternal involvement in Morgan's disappearance. But even more importantly to the non-Mason, there is a complete discussion of Masonry's involvement in the run-up to the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence and the formation of the United States. While Freemasonry may have had an influence in our formative years, it was not a cabal or sinister plot hatched as the embryo of a new world order. To the contrary, there were as many Loyalist Masons and British Masons as there were members of the Revolution. Other favorable aspects: The historical treatment of Black Masonry and its development, including frank remarks that hinder its acceptance; A complete explanation of the concordant bodies of Masonry, especially the York and Scottish Rites; Women in Masonry and the differences between recognized female organizations and Co-masonry. This is a good book. Good for Masonry and good for the public. I can highly recommend it. Unfortunately, the timing of its distribution clashed horribly with a similar book, I would hate to have to make a choice - both are excellent! The Complete Idiot's Guide to Freemasonry is offered by SCRL in soft cover for $16.11 plus $2.50 S&H. (Southern California Research Lodge F & AM, Norman B. You and God People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere, anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
